Ghana Education News-Deputy Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST); James Kwasi Oberko says the University is prepared to help students who have any difficulty going home as necessitated by the university’s shut down.
The university was forced to shut down indefinitely following a demonstration by the students that turned violent yesterday.
The angry students destroyed several property of the university including the official vehicle of the Dean of Students, the Vice Chancellor’s office, various security posts around campus as well as cars parked on campus.
Security personnel on campus were forced to flee during the melee.
The students were angry over alleged brutality meted out to some of them who engaged in drumming and singing on the campus; a tradition regularly undertaken by members of the University and Unity (Male) Halls of the university.
They tell Bernard Buachi of ghanagong.com that the authorities allowed security personnel to brutalize them and also throw their colleagues some of who they believe to be innocent into police cells for singing and drumming.
The KNUST has been relatively rowdy following the conversion of some all-male halls into mixed ones.
Speaking on Citi FM Tuesday morning, Deputy Registrar of the University explained that the students have been given up to midday to vacate the school. Programme host Bernard Avle asked how the university intended to deal with students who came from far and had no money to return.
Mr. Oberko responded that the students are not enemies of the university and that the university will do well to help those who may need some form of help getting home.
