Mr. Abubakari Abdulai is leader of the rice farmers at Donaso

Rice farmers at Donaso in the Ejisu Municipality of the Ashanti region are seeking help fixing a solar irrigation facility that was built for them some three years ago. The farmers say the building of the facility brought them great joy as they believed their water challenges were over.

Their joy was however short-lived as the facility failed to function. The farmers say they still have serious water problems and need help fixing the faulty irrigation facility. They say a new one will also not be a bad idea.

The farmers revealed this when ghanagong.com’s Bernard Buachi, together with Oyerepa FM’s Richmond Frimpong, members of the Ghana Agriculture and Rural Development Journalists Association (GARDJA), visited some farms within the municipality to assess how the government’s Planting for Food and Jobs Programme is impacting the lives of the farmers.

Mr. Abdulai Abubakar, who spoke on behalf of the farmers said they also have other issues beside the pressing water situation. “We do not have water, the subsidized fertilizers too, we mostly do not get some to buy when we go there. We need water, loan facilities, threshers and other machines that can make our work bearable”

Mr. Abdulai Abubakar explained that the farmers numbering 40 have 87 acres combined are able to harvest about three thousand bags of rice and they strongly believe they can do more when given the necessary support.
