General Manager of YFM-Kumasi is advising rappers to reconsider their craft if they want to make the needed impact on the Ghanaian market.
He observes in an interview with ghanagong.com’s Bernard Buachi that in order to gain mileage, a musician should produce stuff that appeals more to the female population.
“Why is kumkum Baghya loud? It is the women. It’s funny, it is easy to relate to and the women love it”, he said and added that music should be like that especially if it targets the Ghanaian market.”Even if you set up a church and women do not accept and join, it will collapse”, he insisted.
He observed that most women prefer singing to rap.
“Look at guys like King Promise, B4Bonah, KiDi, Kwami Eugene and others who are making huge impact. All these guys are not rapping. They are singing.” He believes those who stick to rap especially the upcoming musicians will struggle a lot even if they make it eventually.
Nathaniel Osei Kufour who is a DJ himself (DJ Mahony) also observes that the Nigerian musicians were taking over the Ghanaian music market because they sang more and Ghanaians prefer singing to rapping.
“You will observe that now that we have some of these chaps doing so well in the singing department, the Nigerian music airplay has gone down drastically. We need more singers to secure our music industry” he opined.
He says rap music appeals more to a segment of the male population who are outnumbered by the female music lovers.
He also suggested that rappers who do well find a way to blend both singing and their rap or feature a very good singer and cited Okyeame Kwame and R2bees as examples.
“Shatta Wale does a lot of singing and then inculcates his dancehall style” he observed and adds that Sarkodie succeeds with rap by featuring amazing singers and employing serious beats.
