Ghana Education News-NDC National Youth Organizer hopeful, Yaw Brogya Genfi says authorities of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) should engage more with students and alumni.
He believes a lot of unpleasant occurrences regarding the conversion of Unity and University halls from all-male to mixed halls could have been avoided if proper engagements were made prior to the action by the authorities.
“It is my contention that there was a gap in building consensus between authorities and students of the two halls which has led us to where we are today. It is in the light of this that I urge the authorities of KNUST to engage more with the students in order to bridge the seeming gap and let our young students come to appreciate key decisions such as this as critical stakeholders in the University Community”, he submitted in a write-up copied to rawgist.com.
Yaw Brogya Genfi however states that his biggest disappointment in this matter has to do with the posturing of the government.
“Even though the University is a semi-autonomous body, the government as a key stakeholder in our education cannot sit aloof and watch this degenerate into what it is fast becoming”.
He is disappointed that the government is pretending not to “be aware of the numerous petitions the students have filed to the appropriate quarters for redress” and adds that the least the government could have done was to call the university authorities and the students/alumni to the table for a win-win solution.
“Actors of this government led by the Education minister; Matthew Opoku Prempeh and the Minister of State in charge of Education; Prof. Kwesi Yankah have rather exacerbated this matter through their stonewalling and dismissive attitude which seeks to display open bias against the students”, Mr. Brogya Genfi opines.
He wants the President to properly intervene and call a truce to put the matter to rest for sanity to prevail and not wait for matters to escalate before employing the “usual firefighting shoes”.
