The essence of a new voters’ register has been called to question and opposed vehemently.
Various speakers who spoke Thursday at an Open Forum organized by the Coalition of CSOs for Good Governance pointed out that it was unnecessary for the nation to begin the process of obtaining a new voters’ register at this time.
Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper; Kwasi Pratt Jnr. emphasized that the Ghana had barely ten months to go into her general elections and that it didn’t make sense to begin scrambling for a new voters’ register especially after taking time and a lot of money to update the existing one. He questioned the sense in updating the existing register at mind-boggling cost to the taxpayer and then leaving it to open a new register and called on the EC to shirk the idea.
He went on to accuse the Electoral Commissioners of trying to play God and reminded them that they are serving at the pleasure of Ghanaians and must therefore listen to Ghanaians or be removed.
Mr. Pratt stressed the need for Ghanaians to be more assertive and refuse to accept any electoral results thrown at them without challenging it. He stressed that Ghanaians will not accept the election results of the forthcoming elections if it is anything short of free, fair and transparent.
He encouraged all Ghanaians to participate in the forthcoming demonstrations against a new voters register and use all available platforms to make their voice heard.
